Most technology lawyers are familiar with ASP (Application Service Provision), which is effectively an internet-enabled version of the old “bureau services” model.
However SaaS (software as a service) represents the next generation, harnessing the ubiquity of broadband and the greater sophistication of web browsers and scripting languages.
A SaaS provider develops, hosts and maintains software but packages these together as a service. Like ASP, the service is usually accessed via a web browser. With its attractive risk transfer proposition, demand for SaaS is outpacing ASP and most other on-demand software delivery models.
SOA (or Service-Oriented Architecture) is an evolution of distributed computing. It is a style of software architecture which enables large applications to be built from a variety of software modules, each of which provides specific services in a platform-independent way. The applications can be constructed by reference to the business processes required, rather than being constrained by the compatibility of different software components or their underlying platforms.
Our lawyers keep abreast of the latest trends in the IT industry so that the advice they give is pragmatic, sensible and helpful in any given context. We use our technical understanding to anticipate and solve the legal problems created by leading edge technologies.
