Start the clock: One year remaining to apply to the EU Settlement Scheme
With the application deadline less than a year away (30 June 2021), EU migrants intending to remain in the UK beyond this date are reminded to submit their applications for the EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS) as soon as possible.
The EUSS has had more than 3.6 million applications submitted (with over 3.3 million applications granted). Applications under the EUSS will be considered by the Home Office, and could result in migrants being granted either “settled” or “pre-settled” status. Both categories provide migrants with sufficient evidence of their right to continue living and working in the UK.
The type of status granted depends largely on the duration of time spent in the UK by 31 December 2020. Those who have been continuously resident in the UK for five years by this date are more likely to be granted settled status (indefinite leave to remain), whereas those who have not, but are resident in the UK by the same date (31 December 2020), are more likely to be granted pre-settled status (limited leave to remain valid for five years).
