The shifting focus to online
It is fair to say that in just two weeks, the landscape in respect of Covid-19 has shifted significantly and at pace. Businesses have sought to adapt quickly but it has proved difficult to keep up with the fast moving landscape. We have seen a re-deployment of effort from physical stores to e-comms but it already seems that warehousing facilities not processing food or medical supplies are at risk of shutting down over the coming days. E-comms focussed retail businesses will start to feel the same pain as their high-street rivals as wider lock-downs loom.
Another clear example of just how quickly the landscape is shifting is reflected in McDonald’s and Pret a Manger’s decision to completely close its stores only a couple of days after shifting their efforts to take-away only. Huge decisions, that could impact whether or not a business has a future, that would ordinarily be carefully considered and scrutinised over time are having to be made on the hoof.
