Details of the proposed new settled status scheme were released by the Home Office last week.
The EU Settled Status Scheme is promised to be streamlined and user-friendly and will be open for applications by 30 March 2019. The Home Office will use existing government data to simplify the application process for applicants.
The three steps will require applicants to prove their identity, check they are not serious criminals and evidence their residence in the UK.
EU citizens’ rights will not change until 2021 however our advice remains the same: anyone who is affected by the announcement should apply for evidence of his/her status as soon as possible, particularly those who wish to naturalise as British citizens.
The Home Office’s statement of intent can be found here.
